The promised releasing of archived board tapes has, indeed begun. First up are offerings from a Phil's Pub performance from 29 April, 2000.

Update: Now, a show from the previous weekend at Skelly's Pub is also available. I think it might have been the night I passed out in the basement and planted my knee, then my face, on the cement floor, after which I came back upstairs to finish the show whilst bleeding from the chin. . . .

We're now taking suggestions for the Prozac Rat's Greatest Hits album. We'd like to have the thing mostly recorded before I have my surgery while I still have two arms to choose from. If one were to head over to our blog right about now, or even in five minutes, he/she would find a partial list of songs that are candidates for this album. We're open to suggestions, but not just which songs to re-record for the greatest hits (yes, we'll be redoing the songs from scratch) but we'll be open to advice on how to rearrange the songs, and other stylistic nuggets of wisdom.

Here's an example:
"You guys should redo Farmer Hawk. But reverse the chord structure of the choruses. And play the "Flashlight" lick on a recorder. And give it a groggy sort of feel. Like you just woke up. And it was a restless night's sleep, cause you were sleeping on the ground in a small hut in Peru. In October. Like that, you know?"

We'll take all the suggestions we can get, and may even read some of them.

Who is Mr. Pipe? What is a "Tulsa Slide"?

A few months before Mason One, there was a recording done at the original Fish On Toast Studio, 4th & Orleans, Dell Rapids, by a band called Mr. Pipe.

Although they went by stage names, there are a few clues as to the identity of the players. Like lead singer "Barky" Joe Early. Rumored to be the lost son of the mayor of Dell Rapids at that time.

It is believed that Clark Nova later became Captain Peever. And Toby Croyan was later known as Truckdrivin' Omar.

Highlights of the album, done on 4-Track cassette, are Danny "Gizmo" Miller's irresistable guitar hook on "Beanfork," DSSTM's optigan playing on "God And The Devil...," and the unhinged Youth Angst spewing forth in the fast and furious "Slap-Happy Rugdoctor." A hardcore manifesto against aged small town rumor mongers. Drummer Al "Cabong" Tunheim has never since been so compressed.

Mason One: Seven-Headed Cheesecake is up and online. This 4-track album was produced largely in Madison and Volga, SD in the summer of 1994, if memory serves.

The Masons are a free-form collective based around Doktor Barkey, DSSTM, Xopher Smith and Frank Dada. The track "Ten-Te," (pronounced thden-thdeh) features a young Jonathon Hegg on piano. In the Madison High School band room.
